Alcatel-Lucent provides communications system for efficient clean energy production at Australia’s Gladstone liquefied natural gas plant

Thursday, Sep 13, 2020

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) is to enhance operations and ensure worker safety at a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant in Australia being constructed by leading global engineering, construction and project management company, Bechtel.

An advanced communication system will provide surveillance and secure access capabilities at the Gladstone facility, and support operational data and voice communications.

The GLNG Project is one of Australia’s largest energy projects and will use innovative new technology to process coal seam natural gas (CSG) into LNG for export to global markets.

Alcatel-Lucent will deliver a wide range of communications systems and services for the GLNG Project, including network design, installation, integration, project management and construction.

The use of real-time video and data will allow workers at the GLNG Project to monitor operations in the LNG processing trains, which house liquefaction and purification facilities, on a 24-hour basis.  In addition, real-time data notification will ensure that teams are aware of any potential issues, so that they can be addressed appropriately.

Sean O’Halloran, President and Managing Director Alcatel-Lucent Australia said: “Robust and reliable communications are an increasingly vital component of every business sector, especially in essential industries like energy production. Alcatel-Lucent has extensive global experience in delivering integrated systems to meet the needs of major strategic projects working in challenging environments and supporting advanced capabilities.  We are also committed to supporting the production of cleaner fuel sources as well as stimulating local economies for future economic growth.”

GLNG is a joint venture between one of Australia’s leading gas producers Santos and three of the world’s largest energy companies, PETRONAS, Total and KOGAS.

Alcatel-Lucent will be responsible for project management – including design, procurement, installation and integration – of a complete communications and security system, along with uninterrupted power supply (UPS) back up. A combination of optical fibre cabling, local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), plant UHF radio and VHF marine radio subsystems will deliver data and voice communications to support all operations and the workforce at the plant, including monitoring and control of operations at the LNG trains.

In addition, Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) cameras will allow 24-7 monitoring within and around the plant and a gate access control system will regulate movement at the facility and provide access only to approved personnel.  A public alarm/general alarm (PA/GA) system will deliver essential information to workers and people in the surrounding area.
