AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, has been awarded a strategic framework contract by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) to provide services for their nuclear new build programme in the United Arab Emirates.
The contract, the value of which has not been announced, will see AMEC provide consultancy support to ENEC for their four proposed nuclear reactors in Barakah, in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. These include a range of strategic planning services right through to specific niche nuclear engineering skills.
ENEC will build a total of four nuclear energy plants by 2020, pending regulatory approvals. Units 1 & 2 are already under construction, with the first plant scheduled to commence commercial operations in 2017.
“This is a hugely important contract for AMEC, and is a major step on our nuclear ambitions in the region,” said Clive White, President of AMEC’s Clean Energy Europe business.
“Our world-class nuclear consultancy skills, developed through our 60 years of involvement in the nuclear industry, can play a key role in the development of new build programmes, not only in the UAE for ENEC, but also across the Middle East, and this contract will provide us with significant opportunities to further grow our nuclear business.”
