The top renewable energy integrator in the Northeast, Alteris Renewables, Inc., received an Intelegant Award for commercial solar installation from SunPower Corp, a leading manufacturer of the world’s highest efficiency solar cells and systems. Given annually to one SunPower dealer on the basis of aesthetic design, quality, and performance, the award honored the 73.2kW SunPower solar array on the Hartford, CT headquarters of insurance giant Aetna.

For the LEED-certified Aetna facility, Alteris engineers designed custom solar awnings using 240 SunPower E18 Series solar panels that integrate with the granite facade of the building. Coupled with another Alteris-installed solar array on the company’s Atrium building, Aetna is generating an estimated 237,789 kilowatt hours of power each year.

“We have been very pleased with the performance of the system, the aesthetics of the installation, and the positive local impact to our employees and others in the region,” said Michael L. Marshall, Head of Asset Management & Real Estate Services for Aetna.

Since being installed, the entire solar power system has generated 117% of the estimated expected output.

“We congratulate Alteris for this innovative project,” said Jim Pape, president of SunPower’s residential and commercial business group.  “As a SunPower dealer, they have demonstrated a level of quality and commitment exceeding our expectations, and we look forward to their continued success in 2011.”

According to Ron French, president of Alteris’ solar division, this project is a great example of the potential positive impact renewable energy can have on a company’s operational and environmental sustainability. “We love the fact that thousands of travelers and commuters see the solar panels every day.  We hope that they are inspired by Aetna’s leadership to take action to green up their own lives.”
