ACCIONA Energy North America has been selected to compete for up to $7 billion in contracts to provide renewable energy to U.S. Army facilities. The Department of Defense is the largest single consumer of energy in the world, and it is mandated to meet at least 25% of its facilities’ energy needs with renewable energy by 2025. After a rigorous application process, the Army named ACCIONA as one of the few firms qualified to develop, finance, design, build, operate, own and maintain solar energy plants that will power its facilities.
“This selection is a testament to ACCIONA’s capabilities as a leader in solar energy”
“This selection is a testament to ACCIONA’s capabilities as a leader in solar energy,” said Ilya Hartmann, CEO of ACCIONA Energy North America. “The Department of Defense is the largest single consumer of energy in the world, and its commitment to renewable energy will create long-term benefits for our national security, our economy and the renewable energy industry here in the U.S. ACCIONA is in an excellent position to help the U.S. Army meet its renewable energy goals and we look forward to competing for upcoming projects.”
The Army will pursue opportunities for wind and biomass energy as well and is expected to select the contractors qualified to provide renewable energy from these technologies soon. In total the Department of Defense has committed to deploy three gigawatts of renewable energy on Army, Navy and Air Force installations by 2025, enough to power 750,000 homes.
