T-Mobile to launch femtocell services mid-2009
Friday, Feb 20, 2009
T-Mobile International announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress that it will launch commercial femtocell services in Germany in mid-2009. The cellco invested an unspecified amount in UK-based femtocell manufacturer Ubiquisys in March 2008; pilot tests were carried out four months later in the cities of Cologne and Bonn. T-Mobile has now determined that the technology is ready for commercial launch, but only on a limited scale. Bernhard Scholl, head of T-Mobile’s coverage and transmission design, said the devices will not be sold in shops, and only a select number of customers will be chosen for the rollout, as there are still a number of technical issues that will need to be resolved before the devices are viable for the mass market.
