Outcry over delay of helicopters for Helmand
Tuesday, Nov 18, 2008
Defence officials have been accused of 'deliberately slowing' attempts to introduce extra helicopters to Afghanistan.
Amid fresh concern over the lack of air support for British troops in Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence has admitted it has no plans to accelerate the arrival of the new Future Lynx helicopter, which is due to enter service in 2014. Critics say it means 'essential' extra air support for troops in Afghanistan could be delayed by an additional three years.
Military commanders in Afghanistan have long complained of a shortage of helicopters. Experts said an influx of Future Lynx helicopters would reduce the number of soldiers killed by roadside bombs by providing an alternative to ground patrols.
