CRU’s 11th Wire and Cable conference comes to Munich

Germany has emerged as a world renewable energy leader, which makes the country the perfect place to understand the future of wire and cable consumption in power generation. This year’s conference will include special highlight sessions that focus on the future of renewable energy, connected living, automotive electronics and subsea wire and cable usage. These sessions will explore next generation applications of wire and cable and how it will impact producers, traders and distributors around the world.

AFL launches Rogue® and aeRos® Modular Test Platform

Lowell, MA and Spartanburg, SC – January 20, 2017 – AFL is officially launching the Rogue and aeRos platform, a suite of modular test products and cloud-based software built around the way fiber optic networks are built, operated and maintained. Saving material and improving throughput

Cimteq and ACM Analytical systems have release full integration between CableBuilder, the cable design system and KSM, the cable testing and analysis program.  The integration is considered as a revolutionary advancement in closing the loop between the theories of design engineering and the realities of the shopfloor.

Early this year the two companies announces a fully automated integration of design test parameters from the CableBuilder to KSM test system.  Today’s announcement builds on this foundation by providing design engineering with feedback of historical performance of products at their fingertips.  This enables them to make design improvements that reflect the current realities of manufacturing.  The integration provides Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts, Cp and Cpk, and many more parameters and trends.  It even provides the design engineer with the raw material cost of not making the design improvements necessary.

Production lines over time either improve because of improvement in technology or new equipment, or in fact deteriorate.  Both cases periodically require a fresh look each product tolerances, or line speeds, to optimise its production.  There are essentially three action a design engineer can take, reduce tolerance if a new process improvements are working well.  Increase tolerance if the non-conforming product levels is high.  Or, adjust the line speed to maximise throughput.

AFL recipient of six technology patents

Spartanburg, SC – December 21, 2016 – Several AFL associates were recognized for receiving patent awards for developing new products and technologies within the optical connectivity, fusion splicing and test and inspection divisions.

The Optical Connectivity team received four patents including “small form factor field installable outside plant connector housing” which allows field engineers and technicians to run cable point-to-point and protect the connection in an environmentally sealed, crush-resistant housing. Two patents were received for “universal interface device base and module” which minimizes manufacturing design variation thus reducing costs. Modules can be easily replaced or changed out by technicians and provides an easy means for service providers to replace defective modules or replace installed modules with new or upgrade modules. The last patent is for a “field installable high strength breakout kit.”

AFL’s Fusion Splicing team received a patent for “making fiber axicon tapers for fusion splicers.” This technology provides solutions for people to use fusion splicers instead of polishers to make axicon lenses on fiber ends which can be used for connection between a fiber and a laser chip. AFL’s Test & Inspection team received a patent for “system and method for identifying fiber sequence in a multi-fiber optical cable.” This technology enables OTDR-based identification of fiber sequence.

AFL expands its fiber optic cleaning product line with OPTIPOP-R Refillable Cassette Cleaners

Lowell, MA and Spartanburg, SC – November 17, 2016  AFL has expanded its fiber optic cleaning product offerings with the addition of the OPTIPOP-R family of refillable cassette cleaners. This family includes four models that can be used with common exposed-ferrule connectors, both single fiber and multi-fiber types:

  • OPTIPOP-R1: single slot model for cleaning 1.25 mm and 2.5 mm ferrule connectors, including SC, SC2, FC, ST, MU, LC, MT, MPO/MTP® without guide pins (female) and MT-RJ without guide pins (female)
  • OPTIPOP-R2: two slot model for cleaning 1.25 mm and 2.5 mm ferrule connectors, including SC, SC2, FC, ST, simplex and duplex MU, simplex and duplex LC

The OPTIPOP-R family is used to dry clean the exposed ferrule end faces (UPC and APC) of fiber optic connectors, including the duplex LC and multi-fiber MPO. All four models yield more than 400 cleans per tape and the replaceable tape reels reduce the cost per clean to below $0.07 USD. The pre-washed micro-fiber tape cloth captures microscopic dust, particulate debris, oil and other contaminants to help ensure IEC/IPC end-face quality standards compliance. Constructed of tough ABS resin impregnated with an anti-static agent, the OPTIPOP-R cleaners are suitable for both inside and outside plant environments in service provider, enterprise and data center networks.

AFL’s newest product, Wrapping Tube Cable (WTC) with SWR is an ultra-high density outside plant cable designed for FTTH or access markets. Using new ribbon technology called SpiderWeb Ribbon, WTC provides the smallest cable diameter and lowest weight, high-fiber count ribbon cable in the industry. WTC is available in dielectric or double jacket single armor with fiber counts from 144 to 1,728.

AFL launches FlexScan PON OTDRs for testing In- or Out-of-Service

Lowell, MA and Spartanburg, SC – August 24, 2016  AFL expanded its FlexScan family of pocket-sized OTDRs adding two PON OTDR models. The FS200-304 PON OTDR offers 1310, 1550 and 1650 nm OTDR testing to verify and troubleshoot both in-service and out-of-service FTTH PONs. The FS200-300 FlexScan supports 1310 and 1550 nm out-of-service testing for both PON and point-to-point networks.

All FlexScan OTDRs include AFL’s SmartAuto™ multi-pulse acquisition, enabling users to detect closely spaced events before a PON splitter while still testing effectively through the splitter. FlexScan OTDRs also display test results in both AFL’s icon-based LinkMap® view and OTDR trace view, allowing users to quickly and easily locate faults and identify necessary corrective action. With up to 37 dB dynamic range, both models verify PONs with split ratios up to 1:64.

FlexScan PON OTDRs include 4.3-inch indoor/outdoor touchscreen display, Bluetooth®/WiFi wireless interfaces and an integrated Visual Fault Locator (VFL). The integrated Optical Light Source (OLS) and Optical Power Meter are optional.

FlexScan OTDRs are available in several pre-configured kits combining a user-selected FlexScan with additional fiber verification and troubleshooting tools:

  • FlexScan Basic Kits: combine FlexScan with TRM® 2.0 Basic Test Results Manager reporting software, USB cable and a soft carry case. 
  • FlexScan Plus Kits: adds a fiber ring (launch cable) and One-Click® cleaner plus upgrades TRM to TRM 2.0 Advanced.
  • FlexScan PRO Kits: includes a fiber ring, TRM 2.0 Advanced, One-Click cleaner and adds a FOCIS Flex connector inspection probe with user-selected inspection adapter tips. The carry case easily accommodates additional adapter tips.
  • FlexScan Complete BI/BIPM Kits: includes a fiber ring, TRM 2.0 Advanced, FOCIS Flex with adapter tips and adds a user-selected Optical Fiber Identifier for bend-insensitive fiber (OFI-BI or OFI-BIPM). The OFI-BIPM includes an integrated power meter.

The FlexScan PON OTDRs join previously announced FS200-50 (1550 nm only troubleshooting) and FS200-100 (1310/1550 nm point-to-point verification and troubleshooting) to provide the industry’s smallest, easiest-to-use handheld OTDRs for network installation verification and troubleshooting.
